This is what the University of California, Riverside looked like on January 19, 2012. They called over UCPD, RPD, SWAT, Sheriffs and Private security. All for a peaceful protest to help stop the privatization of public education. To those who can’t fully grasp what this means, maybe this list of tuition cost PER QUARTER in accordance to the year can help:
- 2001: $3,500
- 2012: $13,200
- 2016: $22,800
The media, of course, portrayed the protest simply as students being reckless. And to top things off, when I open my email with the subject “Chancellor White’s Friday Letter of January 20, 2012” I find this:
While many of you may be exposed to media treatments of the meeting, what you may not learn is that nine officers received minor injuries, as barricades were thrown at them and signs used as weapons.
What about the students who got shot, chased down and hit with batons? In this video (at 7:13), a student asks Chancellor White to make a statement about the police brutality that happened— while showing him his injury. He bluntly said no.
